The Wider Service Medal was created to acknowledge the service of Armed Forces personnel, Ministry of Defence civilians, contractors, and other public servants engaged in operational activity that does not meet the traditional "risk and rigour" criteria for campaign medals or the General Service Medal
Its introduction reflects the evolving nature of military operations, where personnel may deliver significant operational impact without facing direct physical danger.
The concept was first endorsed in December 2018 and received final approval from King Charles III in March 2024.
